Fellowship & Internship Opportunities

Western Center also hosts law student interns. In general, we host two students in the summer and will host students during the academic year as our workload permits. We do not offer a salary to our interns and encourage students who would like to work with us to check into their law school's public interest law program for possible funds. Students who would like to clerk at WCLP in the summer of 2008, must send their cover letter, writing sample, resume, and references in by close of business on February 6, 2008 by letter, fax, or email to:

  Greg Spiegel(gspiegel@wclp.org)
Western Center on Law and Poverty
3701 Wilshire Boulevard, Suite 208
Los Angeles, CA 90010

Our past fellows have included:

Jen Flory
Skadden Fellow (2005-2007)

Jen's fellowship project focused on health care affordability for low-income Californians by monitoring the implementation of new reforms, identifying best and worst practices of providers and government, and advocating on affordability issues, particularly medical debt.

Katie Murphy
Skadden Fellow (2000-2002)

Katie's fellowship focused on assessing county health benefits practices throughout the state to identify those practices that impeded people from receiving or staying on low-income health care programs.

Emma Leheny
Skadden Fellow (1998-2000)

Emma’s fellowship project sought to improve the benefits received by California’s welfare participants through impact litigation and assistance to advocates at local legal and social services programs. Emma worked on litigation that successfully challenged a county’s welfare demonstration project that illegally terminated benefits for an entire family when one member had not complied with a welfare requirement. She also helped challenge a federal food stamp policy that excluded families with disabled members from receiving food stamps. In addition to her litigation work, Emma wrote informational materials for advocates, presented at workshops throughout the state and answered requests for assistance that came into Western Center.

Paula Gaber
Liman Fellow (1999-2000)

Paula’s fellowship project was concentrated on the area of education and training programs available for welfare recipients, in particular for students on welfare. She co-authored a guide to welfare for students that has been distributed throughout the state and has conducted advocacy training classes for student welfare recipients throughout the state. She also assisted with litigation that ensured that pregnant welfare recipients receive a supplemental cash benefit to which they are entitled as a matter of law.
