California Congressional Delegation Sign-On to Protect Safety-Net 10/26/2011 Western Center thanks the 21 Members of the California Congressional Delegation who signed onto a letter, circulated by Congressman McGovern, to the Select Committee on Deficit Reduction, urging them to safeguard the nation’s anti-hunger and anti-poverty programs from budget cuts.
On October 13, 2011 Congressman McGovern asked his colleagues to join him as cosignatories on a letter to the Select Committee on Deficit Reduction, urging them to safeguard the nation’s anti-hunger and anti-poverty programs from budget cuts. The letter argues that in the past, deficit reduction recommendations have protected programs and have advocated policies that don’t increase poverty or hunger. The letter can be found at: http://frac.org/pdf/McGovern_SelectCommittee2011.pdf.
Western Center joined the Food Research and Action Center, the California Association of Food Banks, and local anti-hunger advocates to request that the California Congressional delegation sign onto the letter. The list California Representatives who signed on are listed below and the entire list of 127 co-signers can be found at: http://frac.org/pdf/mcgovern_signers_fall11.pdf
Thank you to Congressman McGovern and to all of the Representatives who signed on to this statement protecting programs that serve vulnerable Americans. In the weeks to come, while the Select Committee works on their budget recommendations, the Western Center will continue to work with key allies, California’s Senators and Members of Congress to reinforce the need to protect, if not expand, safety net programs.
