New Reports Find Californians Experiencing Hardship
12/29/2010

As the Legislature and incoming Governor Jerry Brown prepare to close budget gap, two new reports on hunger and homelessness show Californians still facing hardship.

According to a report issued today by the Food Research and Action Center’s (FRAC) using data collected by Gallup as part of the Gallup-Healthways Well-Being Index, California had one of the highest food hardship rates in the country during the first half of 2010. According to the report, over 20% of the people surveyed by Gallup in California are experiencing food hardship.  Click here to see a release of the report published by CA Association of Food Banks.

This report mirrors findings of a study issued last week by the U.S. Council of Mayors which showed that major cities in California had experienced significant increases in requests for emergency food and that requests for emergency shelter in some cities was going unmet.

Legislative officials should keep these numbers in mind as they seek to close the budget shortfall in the coming weeks.
