An Alameda County Superior Court judge has issued an order in Parent Voices Oakland v. O’Connell, temporarily stopping termination of child care subsidies for thousands of low-income parents. The order will remain in effect until November 5, when there will be a further hearing. The cases arises from the Governor’s veto of funding for “Stage 3” child care subsidies, which go to former CalWORKs recipients who made it off of welfare but can’t afford to pay for all of their child care expenses. The suit seeks to require that each recipient’s file be reviewed to see if she might qualify for child care payments under other parts of the CalWORKs child care program.
