Republican Leader Won't Meet With Protesters
The HHS network today mobilized 500 people to the state Capitol today to protest Republican's not voting for a fair budget. A wide range of groups participated including child care, disability community, seniors, IHSS, health care and immigrant groups.
The group gathered in the Capitol Rotunda and sang songs urging a fair and swift resolution to the budget until Capitol police read an order to disperse or be subject to arrest. The crowd peacefully dispersed and headed to the Governor's office. The crowd covered the large bear in front of the Governor's office with black roses to symbolize what the Governor's budget proposals represent to low income Californians.
While this was happening other groups of protesters visited Republican leadership offices. But Martin Garrick, the Assembly minority leader, posted security guards outside his office and refused to meet with families about the budget. Senate Republican leaders were scarce also but staff did with families.
