The legislative Budget Conference Committee is holding an overview hearing with the Dept. Of Finance on the Governor's new cuts. The committee was very critical of the proposed elimination of CalWORKs. Senator Lowenthal called it, 'the corner grocer cut.' Senator Ducheny called it a recipe for homelessness. When the Department of Finance argued that the families would get more Food Stamps, Ducheny shouted 'but they won't have a house to eat it in.' The members questioned the long term impact on homelessness and child welfare. The committee will be hearing from the public tomorrow on these issues. More posts through the day. (see attachment)
