Investing in such programs is fiscally prudent at a time when county governments are being forced to cut services to those who need them most. Investing in a well-designed SSI advocacy effort can increase reimbursements to counties from SSI and Medi-Cal, save counties money from decreased use of county-funded health care, jails, mental health, substance abuse, and other services, in some cases savings of millions of dollars.
